A Seven Week Campaign to Begin 2018

Week 4: Investing in Uncommon Mentorship Which Promotes You

Day Twenty-Seven (2/2/18): Types of Mentorship
Recommended Reading: 1 Peter 5:1-5

While many people have one specific person who they consider their “mentor”, we actually have a few mentors in our lives. Having more than one mentor is essential because we can learn and grow from the wisdom from several walks of life. Let’s talk about the four types of mentorship that exist.

1. Parental mentorship

Parental mentorship, or the wisdom we receive from our parents, is the very first mentorship we were ever under. You were your parents’ protégé before you even knew it! We may not think about our parents as being mentors. In reality, they are the perfect people to mentor us. They know a lot of things about us that others might not. They know how to read us, communicate with us, and they can tell when we’re struggling. God also sends very special people into our lives to be spiritual mothers and fathers. These people can be like parents to us, and they desire to be!

2. Pastoral mentorship

The wisdom we receive through our spiritual leaders and the pastor of our church is pastoral mentorship. This type of mentorship is vital. We all need a pastor who is a spiritual leader in our lives. As a matter of fact, even pastors need pastors! Being fed spiritually each week by our pastors fuels us for the days ahead. It’s true that we must feed ourselves spiritually each day by growing our relationship with The Lord. However, we can learn wonderful lessons from our pastors that we might not learn otherwise. We need that fresh wisdom each week.

3. Professional Mentorship

This is the mentorship we receive from our employers, supervisors, and advisors. This is something that’s really important if you want to be successful in your career. We must invest in uncommon mentorship in our professional life! Find someone who knows how to do what you want to do. Develop a relationship with this person and learn from them! Success is not built without help from others who have gone before us.

4. Prophetic Mentorship

Prophetic mentorship is the wisdom that comes through uncommon anointing. This anointing comes from people who help you during crises and turning points in your life. Prophetic mentors were assigned to you by God! We have all experienced really hard times in our lives. It’s safe to say that no matter who you are or what kind of issues you’ve had, there was at least one person who helped you through. Mentors like this help remind you of who you are and what your future is. When we can’t see past the mountains that are in front of us, our prophetic mentors help us to focus on what God has in store for us. A relationship where a prophetic mentor speaks into your life is the greatest investment you’ll ever make!

These types of mentors all play a very important role in our lives. They speak to us in different capacities during different situations. Do you have mentors like these in your life? If you don’t, start thinking about people who you look up to and desire to be mentored by. Have a conversation with them about it and see where it takes you!

Do you see yourself being one of these four mentors to another person? If a mentor has poured into you, it’s a privilege to take that wisdom and pour it into someone else. Maybe there are people you know that remind you of a younger version of yourself. Consider taking all that you’ve learned and passing it onto someone you care about. Being mentored and mentoring others is just one of the examples of how we can have increase in our lives and be “more” for someone else!

“You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.” 2 Timothy 2:2 (NLT)
