Week 3: Determining to Whom You Have Been Assigned
Day Sixteen (1/22/18): Discovering Your Assignment
Recommended Reading: Romans 12:3-13
We don’t get to decide what our assignment is. God decides it, and it’s our job to discover it! Today we’re going to talk about a few keys to discovering the assignments God gave us.
1. Your assignment is closely related to the “you” God created.
Our assignments are related to our passions, desires, emotions, and things we love. These are the things that motivate us. Like we said last week, “we are driven and energized by the dreams that burn inside of us.”
You might be picturing something good you’re passionate about (like missions trips or ministering to children). But try thinking about the bad things you’re passionate about (like sex trafficking, disease, abortion, or abuse). The things we hate are clues about the things we’re assigned to correct. These things might be hard to think about, but we can’t correct what things we’re not willing to confront. What do you hate? Is there a specific issue that makes your skin crawl? That is a clue to what God has created you to correct! What thing do you have so much compassion for that it breaks your heart? That is a clue to what God has created you to heal!
“I have no recollection of a particular call to the ministry -- I merely saw a need and stepped up to try to meet it.” --Dr. T.L. Osborn
David is a perfect example of this. No one asked David to kill Goliath; he saw the Philistines making fun of God’s people. His anger and desire for justice led him to his decision. God instilled a passion in David, and David acted upon it.
2. The things you love are clues to your gifts and skills.
Love is an indication of focus and obsession. When we love something, we are persistent to pursue it. God gave us all an assignment, but he also equipped us to fulfil it. What do you love? What area are you gifted in? Do you have a lot of wisdom in a particular topic or issue? These are all indicators of your assignment. These are the things you should concentrate on.
Today, pray that God will help you discover your assignment. Meditate on the things you love and the injustices that you hate. The Lord created you with those feelings, so embrace them! The world is in need, and God wants you to use your passions to change it!
