Week 4: Investing in Uncommon Mentorship Which Promotes You

Day Twenty-Two (1/28/18): Mentorship & the Potential for Increase
Recommended Reading: 2 Kings 2:1-14

Welcome to Week 4! We are almost half-way through this devotional plan! This week we are discovering the importance of investing in uncommon mentorship that promotes you. We must all realize that if we want to fulfill the assignment God has given us, we must be willing to learn from others!

To thrive in life, you must understand the value there is in becoming a life-long learner. There will never be a point in life at which you will “arrive” and will not need to learn anything else to be successful. Learning from others is essential if you want to live a life of increase.

One of the best ways to understand the importance of mentorship is to put it this way: In life you can learn a lesson through two different ways, through pain or through people. If you choose to learn from people, it will save you from experiencing something very painful. Pain is not necessarily the best teacher; it just is often the most memorable and powerful. You can learn the same lessons from people if you will learn from their mistakes instead of making your own.

What is mentorship? A mentor is someone who God has chosen to speak to you through. This could be from a variety of people. For example: pastors, teachers, co-workers, parents, spiritual fathers and mothers, and more. God has ordained this person to teach and model success in your life.

Mentors will coach you through your problems to help you fulfill your destiny and assignment. Also, it’s important to know that mentors will be your coach, not your cheerleader. A cheerleader will cheer your fumbles as well as your touchdowns. But a coach will discipline you to work harder next time so there’s no possible chance of a fumble!

A true mentor in your life will ultimately want you to pass them. When someone has your best interest at heart, they want you to go further than they have ever been. A Godly mentor will desire for you to be the best version of you that you can be, not a copycat version of them.

Pursuing mentorship is necessary in order to grow! Here are 3 reasons why mentorship is so essential for you to fulfilling your assignment:

1. It’s a huge key to being released in to increase
2. It’s a huge key to being accelerated in effectiveness
3. It’s a huge key to the fulfillment of your assignment

In our reading today, Elisha received a double portion of the anointing of Elijah. But that was all because he was willing to see him as his mentor. He never left his side, even in his last hours on earth. He wanted to learn as much as he could about him. And finally, it led to Elisha’s double portion of increase!

You may already have Godly mentors (like pastors) in your life. If you do, those are awesome relationships to keep on pursuing and building. If you do not, we encourage you to think and pray about a mentorship relationship. Consider finding a mentor in your specific assignment that can help put you on the fast track to success. Whatever your dream entails, God has placed a person in your life to help you fulfill it as effectively and efficiently as possible. Pray and let the Holy Spirit reveal those relationships to you!

“You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” 2 Timothy 2:1-2 (NIV)
