Week 2: Defining the Uncommon Dream that Energizes You
Day Nine (1/15/18): Facts about Your Uncommon Dream
Recommended Reading: Genesis 37:1-9
In the English language, a dream can refer to one of two things. The first type of dream is, obviously, what happens when we’re asleep. They’re our night visions (some of these are actually meaningful, while others can be pretty strange and confusing!). These types of dreams come to us while we’re asleep, and sometimes we don’t remember them at all. The other type of dream refers to our hopes, aspirations, goals, and visions. Regardless of whether our dreams come while we’re sleeping (through our subconscious), from God (as our goals), or while we daydream, they can be very spiritual in nature. They can help us figure our our assignments from God.
While every person has different dreams and visions, there are a few things that apply to all of us and our dreams. Understanding these facts will help us put our dreams into perspective!
Your uncommon dream is your vision of the future that you desire. This is something that comes to us by inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Non-Christians may get their dreams some other way (worldly entertainment, influence from others, etc.), but in order to fulfill your God-given assignment, you have to receive it from God--only God! It’s important to remember that our dreams aren’t borrowed or duplicated from someone else. They are personal, individual, and tailor-fit for us by the Holy Spirit.
Consider Joseph, who is generally the first person who comes to mind when we talk about dreamers in the Bible. He received a dream from God, which came to him by supernatural revelation. In the same way, God often gives us divine revelation through dreams and visions to show us what our assignments are. These revelations are so special because we would have no way of knowing them if God hadn’t showed them to us. Divine revelation is the greatest source of information we’ll ever discover!
In Genesis 37, God gave Joseph two separate (and kind of crazy-sounding) dreams. They were different, but gave Joseph the same revelation: he saw himself as king. Seeing himself being a leader was a picture of Joseph’s future. The Holy Spirit gave this gift to Joseph to inspire his life, and it became the driving force in his life for decades to come (we will talk about Joseph more in-depth throughout the week.)
The images we see in our minds will control our lives. That is why it’s so important to be aware of who you allow to inspire you. Allow the voice of the Holy Spirit to inspire you “more”! While God gives us dreams and visions, ultimately we are the ones who decide how we react and what we do with them. We can believe, protect, and grow them...or doubt, deny, and destroy them. Think about the dreams and visions that The Lord has given you. Do you know what they mean, or how to respond to them? Think about that today and be encouraged to seek God’s wisdom in bringing your dreams to life! Following our God-given dreams is one of the most effective ways we can be more and do more for the people we were created to witness to!
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.” Joel 2:28 (ESV)
