Week 7: Sowing Uncommon Seeds with Expectation
Day Forty-Three (2/18/18): God Does Everything Through a Seed
Recommended Reading: John 1:1-14
Sowing into our dreams and assignments is the only way that we can be confident to expect a harvest. The concept of sowing and reaping is extremely important, and can be applied to many areas of our lives. This week, we will be talking about how to effectively plant seeds to obtain the harvest we desire.
You might hear the words “sow”, “reap”, and “harvest” and picture a farmer planting crops. That is the perfect picture to represent our reaping and sowing into the Kingdom of God. A farmer plants seeds for the very purpose of harvesting a specific crop. If he wants carrots, he plants carrot seeds. Over time, after tending to the seeds properly, the farmer will finally reap what he sowed! Likewise, we have to sow special seeds that are relevant to the harvest we’re looking for. We’ll talk about this in depth in the days to come.
Our planting and harvesting is possible because God was the very first planter and harvester. Every single thing that God created came from a seed that he had planted. It’s how he operates! A seed is contained within every single living thing. That seed contains a pre-programmed DNA which is able to replicate, reproduce, and multiply.
Think about this: God’s creation of the universe began with a seed. That seed was his Word, as we can learn from our recommended reading. With that seed, he spoke out into the darkness and commanded there to be light (Genesis 1:3). Then when God created man, he had to find another seed. He reached down and took soil from the garden of Eden, blessed it, formed it into a clay image, and breathed life into it. That clay image was the seed that reaped the harvest of a living soul!
God himself is a sower. He sows seed, and he definitely believes in the power of the seed. He has to start with a seed. By sowing them, everything that God wants to increase, increases. In order to multiply or increase something in our lives, we must believe in this power, too.
It’s our human tendency to hoard our seeds. Man’s philosophy is this: “Get all you can, can all you can get, and sit on the can.” However, nothing in your life will ever increase if you store everything for yourself. Your seeds will stay the same, but they will never grow or increase. In reality, our possessions decrease in value when we hoard them because the world around us is growing.
We can be like Satan by being a stealer (John 10:10) or attempting to profit by ungodly means. We can be like man by hoarding and storing everything we’ve got. Or, we can be like God and be a sower of seeds. Today, let God work in your heart to give you the mindset of a sower. Everything in your life will increase, prosper, and multiply!
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Matthew 6:19-20 (ESV)
